FOREWORD

The ICGEB - CEI - JRC-EC - UCM European Workshop on "Trends and Prospects of Med/Pharma Biotechnologies in Europe: Towards Strengthening Regional Cooperation Including CEE Countries" is organized in 3rd - 4th June 2019 by Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava withfunding and organizational support of International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Central European Initiative(CEI) both in Trieste, Italy, and Joint Research Centre of European Commission (JRC-EC) in Brussels, Belgium and also in cooperation with ICARST, CEITEC and EBTNA. The Workshop is held under auspices of Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of Slovak Republic.

The topics of the Workshop are related to the field Biotechnology with the specific focus on Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies (Med/Pharma BT), their current trends and prospects in Europe and specifically in Central and Eastern European Countries.

The focus is to strengthen cooperation in this region within the European programs in the field of Med/Pharma BT in the upcoming period 2021 - 2027, to evaluate opportunities to increase the role of international centers, especially ICGEB, JRC-EC, and CEI in strengthening and coordinating regional cooperation programs. Particular attention is given to panel and working group discussions with the objective to discuss priority themes and set-up informal groups for possible join project proposals for the future period and prepare a setting-up of a cooperative platform and regional CEE network including research institutions and innovative high-tech companies in Med/Pharm BT to act in concerted action with international centers.

At the Workshop more than 90 experts from 16 European countries participate, including 10 CEE countries and several international organizations (EC, CEI, JRC-EC, ICGEB and EBTNA). More than 28 lectures, 11 panel discussion contributions are presented together with 20 posters. The present Book of Abstracts provides a brief overview of the presented contributions (lectures, posters, panel and working group discussions).
